DULUTH, Ga. —

A Duluth family is cleaning up their home after lightning from Wednesday night’s storms sparked a fire in the attic.

Cellphone video shows smoke and flames pouring from the attic of the home on Fairway View Court.

“There was a flash, an explosion all at once. The shock was pretty intense. I was a little bit surprised,” resident Eric Morris said.

Morris said he was playing video games and thought the bolt of lightning hit the house’s satellite dish.

“I was holding the controller and my entire body just all at once shook,” Morris said.

Morris said he decided to go upstairs with his 2-year-old son to wait out the storm.

“He pointed to the corner of the house and he said, ‘Hot. Hot.’ And I looked up and the house was on fire,” Morris said.

Morris said he was able to safely scramble out of the house with his son and their dog.

The Gwinnett County Fire Department said that in a two-hour period overnight, they received 57 calls for service.

A lightning strike may also be to blame for a fire at a southwest Atlanta home.

Crews were able to contain the flames to the top of the home on Hamilton E. Holmes Drive.
