For more than eight hours Thursday homicide units lined the street while K-9 units tracking units worked the backyard as detectives looked to find clues and neighbors watched from a distance.

ATLANTA —

A murder mystery is unraveling underneath a southwest Atlanta home where investigators found human remains.

The body was found underneath a home on Cascade Road Thursday. Channel 2's Ryan Young was there as detectives returned to the home to investigate where the body came from.

Young learned from his sources that the body is that of a woman.

Neighbors in the area said they want the case solved.

"In a neighborhood like this, southwest Atlanta, Cascade, its kind of unbelievable to find something like that here," neighbor Harold Sheridan told Young. "This is a real safe neighborhood."

Young watched as detectives spent most of their day in a crawlspace underneath the home where the body parts were found.

"You wonder how long the body's been there or what went wrong for somebody to put a body under this house," Sheridan said.

Investigators looking for a missing person in the area Thursday afternoon were alerted by a K-9 team that something wasn't right.

Detectives said it's not clear who they've found, but said the body belongs to a woman.

"It may be some time before we're able to positively identify those remains. (It) may have to be through DNA or various other means based on the stages of decomposition of the body," Lt. Paul Guerrucci of the Atlanta Police Department said.

The Medical Examiner's Office confirmed Friday they are going through the painstaking process of analyzing the remains police found.

Officials with the ME's office said they will need several records for a positive ID and will need to determine the cause of death for the woman.

Investigators said it could be several days before they know who this victim is.
