Fire investigators said it could be weeks before they determine the cause of a massive business fire near Atlantic Station.
The fire broke out at Doors Unlimited on 17th Street Monday evening.
Atlanta Fire Department investigators have been unable to get inside the business because it is unstable from the damage and could collapse at any time.
“You never think it’s you. It’s always the other guy, and unfortunately, last night it was me,” business owner Stephen Padget said.
Padget has owned Doors Unlimited since the 1960s, but around 5 p.m. Monday, he watched it go up in flames.
“Last night I was OK. This morning, when I saw it, I broke down,” Padget said. .
Nearby business owner Pat Horton said he owes everything to the Atlanta firefighters who prevented the fire from spreading.
“It could have been an incredible disaster, not only for the businesses like mine that are next to it, but the people who own homes here,” Horton said.
Doors Unlimited made high-end garage doors and wooden doors, which firefighters said helped fuel the flames.
Investigators asked to see Channel 2’s helicopter footage of the blaze to get a better idea of how the fire jumped from one part of the building to the next. At this point, they said it does not look suspicious.
