Groups join forces against HOT lanes

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. —

Since their debut last month, the High Occupy Toll lanes on Interstate 85 have outraged many metro Atlanta drivers. A group of citizens has now formed a coalition to put a stop to them.

"The number of citizens represented by our combined coalition is a force to be reckoned with," said Stolen Lanes co-founder Howard Rodgers. "We're nearing 10,000 total supporters with the combined support of our groups."

Rodgers, of Stop the Hot Lane, joined forces with Victor Ramkisson, of Against the Peach Pass and Chris Haley, of Stop Peach Pass to create Stolen Lanes. The group has set up stolenlanes.org, where opponents can sign a petition and speak out against HOT lanes.

“The number of people opposed to the recent implementation of the HOT lanes keeps growing. This is not a problem that will go away without acknowledgement of the issue and a plan to correct it by SRTA and the Georgia Department of Transportation," Ramkisson said.

Drivers have complained of the cost of the HOT lanes, saying the cost is not worth the time saved through the express lanes. Gov. Nathan Deal even intervened, lowering the rates. But some drivers have said it’s not enough, adding that the lanes create backups in non-HOT lanes.

The issue came up at an Occupy Atlanta demonstration in Snellville this week. Their Gwinnett counterparts said one of the biggest problems in the county is the issue of HOT lanes. Occupy Atlanta organizers said Gwinnett protesters are looking into how to tackle the issue.

Stolen Lanes will be hosting a town hall HOT lane meeting next week. The meeting will be held at the Gwinnett Justice Center in Lawrenceville at 7 p.m. Nov. 17.
