Georgia Kids: The Obesity Crisis

ATLANTA —

Channel 2 Action News anchors Justin Farmer and Jovita Moore host an in-depth look at a very serious issue in Georgia: childhood obesity. Nearly half of Georgia’s children are obese.  Experts pronounce the situation an epidemic.

Local doctors tell Channel 2 they are finding more adult diseases in overweight children, seeing more type two diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesteral and sleep apnea. They also explain why it’s taken so long for people to recognize the problem.

“As part of our commitment to the community we want to elevate the awareness of this crisis. We also want to shine a light on solutions for this serious problem facing so many children in Georgia.” said Tim McVay, vice president and general manager of Channel 2 WSB-TV.

While talking with local parents, doctors, teachers and experts, Channel 2 found a very inspiring message of hope. Children tell their own amazing stories about losing weight, feeling happier and more confident. The special showcases the many creative ways families have successfully tackled weight problems together.
