Funerals, visitations announced for officers killed in helicopter crash

Funerals and visitations will be held later this week for the two Atlanta police officers killed in a helicopter crash Saturday night.

Officer Richard J. Halford’s family will receive visitors from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Jackson Memorial Baptist Church at 534 Fairburn Road N.W., a police spokesman announced Tuesday.

Halford’s funeral will be held at Jackson Memorial at 11 a.m. Friday. A police motorcade will leave Turner Field for the church at 9:30 a.m.

Officer Shawn A. Smiley’s family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Gregory B. Levett & Sons Funeral Home at 4347 Flat Shoals Parkway, Decatur.

Smiley’s funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Atlanta at 4400 North Peachtree Road. A motorcade of fellow officers will depart Turner Field at 9:30 a.m.

Police spokesman Carlos Campos said donations are being accepted at any Wells Fargo bank branch for the Richard Halford Memorial Fund and the Shawn Smiley Memorial Fund.
