Fulton Co. certifies election results after state deadline

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. —

Fulton County certified its election results Monday night, just after the deadline it had to meet to avoid potential fines.

Voters went to the polls on July 31 for a primary election, but it took until Aug. 6 for Fulton County to certify its results, the last county in Georgia to do so.

Now, Secretary of State Brian Kemp is launching an investigation into the delay.

“It’s certainly troubling to us. We have deadlines for the count to be completed,” Kemp said.

Over the weekend, the county was still counting the votes. A spokeswoman admitted the county was slow inputting some of the early ballots.

Channel 2’s Lori Geary caught up with Kemp in Athens on Monday. He said he reached out to Fulton County several times to offer assistance, but got no response.

“We don’t know exactly what the problem is. That’s one of the frustrating things for me. It would be nice if we did know. We don’t, but we’re going to find out,” Kemp said.

Kemp’s office has launched a formal investigation into the problems and sent investigators in last week to monitor the vote counting process at the Fulton County Board of elections.

For the tight Fulton County Sheriff primary between Richard Lankford and incumbent Ted Jackson, the county is holding a recount that will last until Wednesday.

Fulton County can expect to be called before the State Board of Elections to try to explain what went wrong.

It is not known how much the county could face in fines.
