With wild price swings at the gas pumps, the U.S.’s dependency on Middle Eastern oil has become a hot topic. Channel 2 Action News went looking for answers about what’s really behind the unstable gas prices and got rare access to the Canadian oil sands.
In an hour long special, Channel 2 anchors Jovita Moore and Justin Farmer gave viewers an in-depth look at the debate over where Georgia’s oil comes from.
Channel 2 cameras took viewers where few have ever been: the oil tar sands in Alberta, Canada. Canada mines more than a million barrels of oil each day, but none of that oil makes it to Georgia. Several companies mine it and all want to get it deep into the U.S. market including Georgia. The problem: Atlanta gets most of its gas from Gulf coast refineries and there aren’t enough pipelines to get Canadian oil to those refineries
