Fayette Co. community wants more security after string of crimes

By Amy Napier Viteri

Neighbors at a mobile home park gathered to take action against crime in their Fayette County community.

People living in the Kenwood Landing neighborhood told Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri they want more security after a string of recent crimes, including a murder over the weekend.

Investigators with the Fayette County Sheriff's Office said 25-year-old Kevin Pope shot and killed 22-year-old Oscar Fuentes Jr. on Greenview Circle Saturday afternoon during a suspected drug deal.

"More things are happening in this neighborhood," said neighbor Alex Soto. "I think
it's getting more dangerous here."

Management at the Kenwood Landing community told Viteri they weren't able to comment on the safety issues, but Channel 2 Action News noticed some new safety measures in place.

Neighbor Enrique Arenas told Viteri it's not safe for kids to walk outside anymore. He and dozens of neighbors gathered at the complex to get signatures demanding more security from management.

He said management told him there was nothing they could do when he brought up safety concerns previously.

Arenas said he would like to see cameras on the property as well as security guards.

Antonia Lozano helped organize the meeting of neighbors. She spoke to those gathered and told them they also need to look out for each other. She told Viteri she was worried for her kids’ and grandchildrens’ safety.

Right after the interview with Lozano, a man who identified himself as a security guard pulled up.

He told Viteri he was part of a new 24-hour security detail that just started that day.

Neighbors said the management didn't tell them about the new security guard and they would still like to see further measures taken.
