LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. —

A father and son arrested after police shot and killed one of their relatives were released from jail early Friday morning.

Emotions ran high Thursday night as the Clark family learned that officers killed their son.

“He was my baby. He was my youngest son,” the man's mother said.

Police said 32-year-old James Clark left them no choice but to shoot when he approached them with a weapon.

“Something occurred where the officers felt threatened. We had two officers. They fired and Mr. Clark was shot and killed,” Corporal Jake Smith said.

The incident happened Thursday evening on Trophy Trail near Five Forks Trickum Road in Lawrenceville.

Officers received a call that Clark was suicidal and standing in the driveway holding a rifle.

“His roommate was also in the driveway before the cops shot him telling them it was a BB gun and they shot at him and they killed him,” James Clark's brother Robert Clark

“He was holding what appeared to be a deer rifle with a scope,” Smith said.

As police were investigating the shooting, it overwhelmed his father and brother and police arrested and booked Thomas and Robert Clark into the jail for disorderly conduct.

“It’s unfortunate and it’s the last thing we wanted to do in a situation like this,” Smith said.

The two officers who fired the fatal shots have been placed on administrative leave.
