GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. —
An elderly woman was killed and an elderly man injured in a house fire in Gwinnett County.
Firefighters said when they arrived at the home on Flowery Branch Road around 8 p.m. they found flames shooting out of most of the windows and doors.
An hour after arrival, flames were still shooting through the roof, but with people still inside, firefighters decided to go in.
Firefighters found Mindy Heart dead inside the home.
“She was a great woman. She doesn’t have to suffer anymore. God took her away,” Heart's granddaughter, Angel Chandley, said.
Firefighters were able to rescue the man inside the home. He was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center with significant injuries.
Firefighters credited a new station built three miles from the home for their ability to get to the home in time to pull the man from the fire.
“They knew this was an extremely hazardous situation. They entered the building trying to find and rescue the person inside,” Lt. Eric Eberly of Gwinnett County Fire Rescue said.
