GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. —
Fourteen people are looking for a place to stay after fire damaged eight units at an apartment complex Sunday morning.
Emergency crews are working to put out hot spots at the Sweetwater Apartment complex off Old Norcross Road in Lawrenceville.
Firefighters said everyone made it out of the fiery units safely, but one person was taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation.
When firefighters arrived just after 7 a.m., several units, especially on the top floor where the fire started, had a lot of flames and a lot of smoke, authorities said.
The Gilbert family said they woke up to police banging on their door telling them to get out. So they grabbed their children, including a toddler and a newborn, and ran.
Keith Gilbert said his priority was to "keep everybody safe and together."
Now the Red Cross is helping the Gilberts and several other families find a place to stay.
Fire officials are also trying to reunite a rescued cat with its owners.
