The downtown connector northbound was shut down for hours south of Langford Parkway due to an overturned tanker truck.
The truck was holding 34,000 gallons of an unknown corrosive material, some of which spilled onto the road, the Atlanta Fire Department said. A source told Channel 2's Jodie Fleischer that the material was alminum sulfide.
The crash happened around 1 p.m., and the interstate reopened shortly before 4:30 p.m.
Drivers were directed to turn around using the HOV lane to avoid the road blockage.
The Fire Department said another tanker was need to siphon out the material before the spill clean-up.
