DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. —

One by one, the nine members of the DeKalb County school board were called to school board headquarters Thursday to answer questions from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

The eight-member SACS team is investigating numerous complaints about board mismanagement and budget problems.

The district is operating on a $20 million deficit, while there are complaints the districts spent thousands of dollars on legal fees and other issues.

SACS CEO Mark Elgart said there were several complaints about board members involved in hiring and termination issues.

Channel 2's Dave Huddleston talked to the chairman of the DeKalb school board, Eugene Walker, about how the meeting went.

"They asked me questions about how we process information in regards to the budget and how we monitor the budget and how we communicate with the superintendent and the staff," Walker said.

Huddleston saw other board members leave the meeting.

Board member Nancy Jester talked to Huddleston and said she welcomed the meeting.

She said the investigation will help restore order and professionalism to the board.

The accreditation board will remain on site through Friday and then give their full report in November.
