DeKalb County police fired the officer who hit and killed a man crossing Memorial Drive.

Clifton Hightower died in May. This week, Channel 2 Action News confirmed Jason Cooper was let go on July 25.

Investigators said Cooper killed 28-year-old Hightower while attempting to catch up to a police chase.

The same night Hightower died, Mitt Lenix was shot and killed at the Starlight drive-in in DeKalb County.

Police later arrested Quentric Williams for Lenix's death.

From the very beginning officials said they were investigating how fast Cooper was driving and if he had his lights and sirens on.

"Eighty miles per hour with no light, that's a mad man. I want the prosecutors to do make an example out of him so it won't ever happen again," said Hightower's stepfather Michael Davis.

On Monday, Channel 2's Erica Byfield learned DeKalb's Solicitor General's Office asked the District Attorney's Office to review Cooper's involvement in Hightower's death.

"I'm not saying I'm angry with him, and I'm not saying I forgive him yet, but I'm saying he needs to take really close look at his life," said Hightower's mother Anna Maria Davis.

The Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council or P.O.S.T., the agency that certifies officers, is also investigating Cooper.
