College Park police looking for KFC robber

By Tom Jones

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. —

A federal agent found himself in the middle of an armed robbery where he became the victim. And it's all caught on a fast-food restaurant's surveillance video tape.

College Park police said on Aug. 18, two men burst into the Kentucky Fried Chicken on Virginia Avenue. One had a gun and immediately pointed it at the only customer at the counter.

The men ordered the customer to the floor. They had no idea he was an off-duty federal agent who had just flown into town and was trying to grab a bite to eat.

Police said one of the men started digging in the agent's pocket.

"(They) took his wallet and car keys," said Sgt. Jeff Hightower with the College Park Police Department.

One of the men jumped over the counter and tried to steal money from the register but couldn't open it. The man with the gun tried to open it but he couldn't get it to open either.

The robbers quickly dashed out of the store. Detectives said they then stole the agent's rental car. It was found later in East Point.

"They were shown up later in DeKalb County attempting to use the agent's credit cards at a convenience store," Hightower said.

Police said the agent didn't have his gun. They say the employees ran and hid in the store's cooler or ran out a side door.

Officers have released the video in hopes someone can identify them.

"I'm sure somebody knows them," Hightower said.
