LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. —
Gwinnett County police are working to identify human remains after young children discovered them behind their home.
Investigators searched the creek behind a Lawrenceville home and collected the bones on Saturday.
Channel 2’s Kerry Kavanaugh spoke to the babysitter who was with the children when they found a human skull.
Babysitter Caroline Nelson said she was hiking with several young children Saturday afternoon behind a home on Azalea Drive when one of the boys made the discovery.
“He said, ‘There’s a skeleton,’ and I thought he was joking,” Nelson said.
When Nelson got closer, she said she realized it was not a joke. She noticed a leg bone, hip bone and ribs not far from the skull. Nelson called the homeowner and Gwinnett County police.
“We’re treating it as a suspicious death investigation. There’s nothing to say right now. It was a homicide,” Cpl. Jake Smith said.
Police said they believe the remains are those of a young black woman between the ages of 15 and 30.
“The detective has already compared what little information he has so far from some missing person cases in the area. So, nothing seems to quite be a match, but we have quite a few to go through,” Smith said.
Police said a black T-shirt recovered in the area says “Beloved Community March. Memphis, Tennessee.”
Police said it was an event to honor the 40th anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King Jr.
Nelson said she hopes what she found will bring the family some closure.
“If you lost a family member … they were probably worried,” Nelson said.+
