Car crashes into pole; 2 killed

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. —

Georgia State Patrol investigators are looking into whether rain played a part in an accident that killed two people on Interstate 85 in South Fulton County.

Crews shut down the northbound lanes near Senoia Road Sunday evening for about an hour after an SUV veered off the road and crashed into a pole.

Fairburn police also responded and said another car may have been a factor.

"It's still under investigation. There's a possibility the vehicle was cut off by another vehicle, causing the vehicle to spin out," Detective Sgt. Charles Israel told Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri.

Witnesses told police a newer model car, possibly a Pontiac, cut off the SUV just before Fayetteville Road, causing it to lose control.

Investigators said they were working to learn more about that car.

Three people were inside the SUV at the time of the crash.

Police said one person died at the scene and another died after being transported to Grady Memorial Hospital.

A third person was also at Grady and conscious, according to investigators.

Police said it was raining heavily at the time of the crash.

"Rain is always a factor. That's why we always ask people to slow down," Israel said.

Crews opened two lanes as they worked to remove the wrecked car.

All lanes were back open by around 9 p.m.
