CANTON, Ga. —
A burst pipe left 1,000 Canton homes and businesses without water on Sunday. A boil-water alert is in place in areas west of I-575, including downtown Canton and an area from Highway 140 toward Waleska. As crews spent the day on Sunday digging and pumping water to get to the burst pipe, Canton resident Allie Thurman made do without water. "About 12 o'clock, I guess it just completely went out," Thurman said. Interim Canton Police Department Chief Todd VandeZande showed Channel 2's Carl Willis the work site near Riverstone Parkway. He said a 15-foot section of pipe split around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday. "Looks like the pipe was set basically on the creek bed, and over a period of time enough water had pushed against the joint in the pipe and cracked the side of the pipe," he said. The result left residents dry. The water was restored to the local hospital Sunday afternoon, but dozens of restaurants and coffee shops were unable to operate through the night. A crew pumped water to isolate the broken pipe. When that was done, crews put a sleeve over it to get the water running and the pressure back to normal. VandeZande said residents are on a boil-water alert until the city can have a sample tested. VandeZande said it could be Monday afternoon or evening before they get the test results back to call off the boil water alert.
A Channel 2 Action News investigation finds thousands of local votes in the last presidential election didn’t count, though many should have.
