SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. —

An overnight fire forced several families from their Sandy Springs apartments.

Priscilla Martin told Channel 2 that she first thought someone was smoking near her apartment on Roswell Road, but when she looked out her peephole and saw flames, she started to alert her neighbors.

“I screamed, ‘Jaycel,’ because I wanted her to get out too, because I didn’t know if it was going to go into the apartment, then I went and called the fire department,” Martin said.

Investigators said the fire started in the stairwell of the Versailles Apartments just after midnight Thursday.

All four units in the building were occupied, and Battalion Chief Manny Trujillo said those people could have been trapped if the apartments did not have back doors.

“There’s no way they would have been able to get out of there. A lot of heavy smoke,” Trujillo said.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and all of the residents made it out without injury.

Investigators plan to return to the complex to determine the cause of the fire.
