CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. —

An officer-involved shooting broke out outside a Clayton County shopping center Monday afternoon.

Clayton County police confirmed one of their officers shot a man around 2 p.m., but his condition is unclear. News Chopper 2 flew over the El Dixie Plaza on Old Dixie Highway, where crime scene tape surrounded the parking lot and several police cars were nearby.

Police said they were called to the area based on reports of a deranged person threatening people with a knife.

“As the officers tried to talk to him, tried to call him down, he became aggressive towards the citizens and the officers, and as a last resort, the officers had to shoot the suspect,” Clayton County police Lt. Chris Windley told Channel 2’s Erica Byfield

A witness, who asked not to be named, suggested the man pursued a confrontation with police.

“The guy had the knife to his throat, and he was like, ‘Kill me. Kill me,’ and the police talked to him for a while, and I heard three shots and he went down,” the witness said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist with the investigation.
