Fatal I-20 crash

ATLANTA —

An 8-year-old was killed and another person injured when part of a tractor-trailer flew across an Atlanta highway and hit a car.

The incident happened on Interstate 20 near downtown Atlanta on Wednesday evening.

The tractor-trailer was driving eastbound when a mechanical part came off and struck the windshield of a car driving westbound, the Georgia State Patrol said. The part struck the driver’s arm and fatally injured a Decatur boy in the backseat.

The crash shut down I-20 in both directions for several hours while authorities investigated.

The 8-year-old victim was identified as Cameron McIlwain. He was in the car with 29-year-old Jameka Malone, whose arm was amputated as a result of her injuries. A 19-month-old in the backseat was also treated for minor injuries from glass.

The GSP said any charges in connection with the crash are pending the outcome of the investigation.

Three other cars also struck debris in the roadway, but no injuries were reported.
