JONESBORO, Ga. —

A traffic stop in Clayton County ended with a suspect shot and killed by a police officer and another officer in the hospital.

Clayton County police said an officer pulled over a car with five passengers on Mt. Zion Road near Tara Boulevard late Wednesday night.

Police said one of the passengers had a warrant for his arrest but refused to cooperate with the officer.

“While checking him out, they began to pat him down, and he began to reach around his waistband and a struggle ensued,” Sgt. Otis Willis of the Clayton County Police Department said.

The officers said the man pulled out a gun and started shooting.

“During the time he pulled his weapon out and was firing, he struck the driver of the vehicle he was in,” Willis said.

Officers returned fire, killing  the man. During the gunfight, another passenger in the car ran away. Two others were detained for questioning.

One officer was taken to the hospital for injuries suffered during the fight. The condition of the driver, who was shot in the stomach, has not been released.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents are investigating the shooting.
