CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
Democrats meeting in Charlotte to nominate President Barack Obama also finalized a party platform that generated some buzz among Georgia delegates.
The Democratic platform is the first to include support for gay marriage, but has also drawn criticism because it originally did not include the word God.
President Barack Obama personally intervened to order Democrats to change language in their party platform to add a mention of God and declare that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, campaign officials said Wednesday.
Scrambling to end the furor, Democrats abruptly changed the platform early Wednesday evening to reinstate language from the 2008 platform that said "we need a government that stands up for the hopes, values and interests of working people and gives everyone willing to work hard the chance to make the most of their God-given potential." Mitt Romney and other Republicans had seized on the omission to criticize the Democrats.
"I don't think the word 'God' was omitted from the platform. I think it wasn't intentionally included. The sense there was some conversation to take God out, I think is a tempest in a teapot," said House minority leader Stacey Abrams.
"I really don't think that was an intentional omission," delegate Mo Ivory told Channel 2's Lori Geary.
Democrats feel their platform conveys the moving forward message the president will deliver Thursday.
We're not going backwards, we're going forward," Jesse Jackson told the Georgia delegation on Wednesday. "We fight. We fight with hope. We will win and deserve to win."
Democrats in Georgia also voted unanimously for the marriage equality plank, calling it a historic moment.
"My reaction as an out proud gay man, I'm actually very happy. It's an immense privilege to be here as a delegate and as someone who has a loving partner, actually today, is my wedding anniversary of eight years so it means a lot to me personally," delegate Reese McCrainie told Geary.
"I think actually more and more people in Georgia and across the South and the country are accepting gay people," McCrainie said.
