Investigators Search For Cause Of Gwinnett Plane Crash

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. —

A wreckage recovery crew arrived Monday and began hauling away pieces of an airplane that crashed into a Gwinnett County home Friday. The crash killed the pilot and a woman inside the home.

Investigators spent the weekend gathering debris and placing it underneath a tent. Officials said they are still trying to figure out an exact cause for the crash.

Crews began the task of removing the pieces from the twin-engine Cessna 310 that slammed into the home that once stood on Walker Drive in Lawrenceville.

The pilot, James Wardlaw, died in the crash. He was on his way to visit his children in Tennessee.

Inside the home, Judith Kirchner, 62, died.

The crash happened Friday afternoon sparking a fire that torched the home to the ground.

Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board said it appeared Wardlaw, who took off from nearby Briscoe Field, may have been trying to go back to the airport and was in a steep turn when he crashed.

The NTSB has yet to determine exactly what caused the plane to go down. They said their investigation could take months.

Investigators said they are also looking into whether Friday’s rainy weather played a role in the crash.
