Inmate Accused Of Beating Gwinnett Deputy

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. —

A Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department deputy was taken to the hospital Wednesday evening after he was attacked by an inmate at the Gwinnett County Jail, police said.

Police said Deputy William Lamb was working a housing unit when inmate James Washington attacked him. Washington struck the deputy in the face and then began pounding his head into the concrete floor inside the jail unit, according to officials.

Two other inmates in the housing unit rushed to the Lamb’s aid and pulled Washington off of the deputy until other deputies could reach him, police said.

Lamb was unconscious and unresponsive when deputies first arrived and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. He was treated and released.

Police said Washington is currently in jail on charges of criminal damage to property second degree and violation of probation. More charges against him are pending.
