Hindu Temple Dedicated In Gwinnett

LILBURN —

The Hindu temple that has been under construction in Gwinnett County was dedicated on Sunday

The temple, officially called the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, is the largest of its kind in the U.S. A Mandir is a traditional Hindu place of worship that is built based on architectural guidelines from ancient Hindu scriptures.

It's made of limestone, marble and sandstone. No nails or screws were used in the construction that began in 2005.

Thousands of volunteers helped hold down the estimated $19 million in construction costs.

The traditional design features custom-carved stonework, a wraparound veranda and five prominent pinnacles reminiscent of the Himalayan hills. Giant stairs mimic the climb worshippers have to make to mountainside temples in India.

It will open to the public on September 1.
