Halloween Display Offends Some, Causes Stir In Cherokee

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. —

Melissa Neese said she didn’t mean to cause a stir with the choice of Halloween decorations outside her Cherokee County home.

“It’s an election year and this is a great opportunity to show our patriotism,” said Neese.

Neese set up a lawn display with puppets resembling presidential candidates Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain.

The display shows a bloody skeleton behind Obama as he stands next to McCain.

“It’s kind of like the shadow of death behind Obama. We’re kind of more of McCain advocates,” said Neese.

Since putting up the display Monday, drivers have slowed down to take pictures and some residents have begun to worry about what the bloody skeleton actually means.

“Is it death or what?,” one viewer wrote in an email to Channel 2 Action News.

"I wanted to draw your attention to something I find very disturbing," another viewer wrote.

Neese said neighbors and passersby need not worry.

“It’s just to encourage people to vote. That’s about it. I haven’t really finished it [display]. I was going to put pumpkins and a vote sign up there,” said Neese.
