Ga. Tech Building Evacuated After Explosion

A Science and Technology building at Georgia Tech was evacuated Thursday afternoon after a minor explosion on the second floor.

HazMat crews were called to the Ford Building located on Ferst Drive on the Georgia Tech campus just after 12:30 p.m.

The building was evacuated and Atlanta Fire Crews and HazMat crews entered the building just before 1 p.m. School officials said the situation has been contained. They have not yet released what caused the explosion, but they did say Tetrahydrofuran, Acetonitrite and Sodium were the chemicals involved.

Georgia Tech's Emergency Notification System was activated in error advising the entire campus to evacuate. Witnesses on the scene said there was a lot of confusion and many students were evacuating from all buildings. A follow up message was sent to advise the campus of the error and there is no need to evacuate the entire campus.

Georgia Tech officials said they will conduct an investigation to determine why the emergency notification message was sent in error.

One person received minor injuries because of the explosion. They are expected to be okay.
