Fulton Jail Firings Expected

Four Fulton County jail workers, including deputies, were expected to be terminated Friday after two inmates were mistakenly released on the same day.

One inmate charged with burglary, Sterling Bruno, was released Tuesday after a computer operator overlooked an outstanding warrant that would have kept him in custody, said Lt. Clarence Huber, a spokesman for the sheriff's department. The computer operator also will be fired. Bruno, 31, was recaptured.

The second inmate, Kenneth Dodd, was wanted for shoplifting, Huber said. He was freed because an employee did not adhere to the release process in place at the jail. Dodd, 44, was rearrested Thursday in southwest Atlanta near Cleveland Avenue.

"Zero tolerance means zero tolerance," said Sheriff Jackie Barrett said. "This was a breach that will simply not be tolerated.

"I am not going to be overly tolerant of these kinds of mistakes made by staff," she said. "Especially when we have protocol, we have policy, we have procedure and I expect staff to follow them."

Four workers, including three male sheriff's deputies, and a female computer worker are expected to lose their jobs after a meeting with Barrett. The deputies were said to have over 10 years of experience working for the county.

The workers have not yet been named.
