Flu Shots From Pharmacists Will Require Prescription In Georgia

ATLANTA —

It may be tougher to get the flu shot in Georgia this year.

The Georgia Board of Medicine says you’ll need a prescription to get a shot from a pharmacist, according to News/Talk 750 Health Reporter Sabrina Gibbons.

"What they're saying is that blanketed protocols can no longer occur. Each patient needs a prescription order, a valid prescription order to receive a vaccination or immunization from a pharmacist," said Stuart Griffin of the Georgia Pharmacy Association.

Patients will still be able to get flu shots from doctors and county health departments without prescriptions.

Griffin says many pharmacists cancelled vaccine orders after they were informed of the change. That means less vaccine will be coming into Georgia and that could mean fewer Georgians will be vaccinated against the flu
