Fisher-Price Doll Praises Islam, Local Mom Claims

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. —

A local mother said a holiday gift is sending a message of its own. The Cherokee County mom said she purchased the doll for her daughter at a Wal-Mart in Canton. When she brought the doll home, she heard something she didn’t expect.

The doll made cooing sounds when activated by her daughter’s movements and that’s what Jennie Barker said she thought she was getting when she brought the Fisher-Price “Little Mommy Cuddle and Coo” doll Tuesday. She and her husband took the doll out of the box to test it before wrapping it up and putting it under the tree.

The Barkers said on the third cycle of sounds the doll said, “Islam is the light.”

“We just stared at each other. We didn’t know what to say. It put chills all over my body,” said Barker.

She called the Wal-Mart where she bought the doll just hours earlier. The manager told Barker they would make sure all the dolls were pulled off the shelf and offered her a refund.

Channel 2 called the 800 number on the toy and the customer service representative told reporter John Bachman that the speaker system condenses all of the baby sounds to make “Islam is the light.” Fisher-Price stopped making the doll so it could fix the problem but there is no recall on it.

“Recall it. If it’s a mistake, that’s fine, everyone makes a mistake,” said Barker.

Barker said she wanted to warn other parents going Christmas shopping.

“My daughter is learning to talk and repeat what you say. She plays with this doll. I do not want my daughter’s first words to be ‘Islam is the light,’” said Barker.

The dolls are made in China. It is up to the individual stores to pull the dolls.

The customer service representative Channel 2 spoke with said the popular doll has been fixed and will be coming back on the market soon.
