Fired 911 Operator Fights For Her Job

ATLANTA —

A fired Fulton County 911 operator who handled a fatal call last summer fought Thursday to get her job back.

Gina Conteh went before the county personnel board to explain why she feels the county's 911 system was responsible for some of her failures.

Conteh's attorney told the board she didn't necessarily do everything right during that 911 call, but said the county's poorly managed 911 center overworked Conteh and assigned her to a job she wasn't trained to handle, setting her up to fail.

County attorneys argued that the case is about a veteran employee who failed to do her job properly.

Conteh handled the Aug. 2 call from Darlene Dukes, a Johns Creek woman who was having trouble breathing.

Conteh dispatched an ambulance to a similar-sounding address in Atlanta. First responders didn't reach Dukes for 25 minutes. The ambulance was delayed until an hour after the first 911 call.

Conteh had worked for Fulton County 911 for 12 years when she was fired just days after that call.
