ATLANTA —
Federal prosecutors charged Magistrate Judge D. William Garrett, 72, Forsyth County deputy Russell Garrett, 43, and Malika Garrett, 42, with human trafficking, alien harboring, witness tampering, and making false statements.
Russell and Malika Garrett are married and live in Woodstock. Russell Garrett is William Garrett's son.
Malika Garrett is an artist. She was born in Calcutta, according to her Web site malikagarrett.com.

The federal indictment accused the Garretts of conspiring to help an Indian woman "enter the United States under false pretenses for the purpose of serving as a nanny" for the Garrett's children.

While forcing the nanny to work up to 16 hours a day the Garretts then stopped paying the nanny, refused to let her leave their home and threatened to have her deported, according to federal prosecutors. Prosecutors also said the Garretts forced the nanny to live in their unfinished basement that didn't have heat.
"This type of abuse is insidious, as it preys upon those who are vulnerable due to their immigration status and unfamiliarity with this country’s legal system," said U.S. Attorney David E. Nahmias. "Not paying someone for their hard work, and then threatening them with deportation if they report such abuse, is a violation of federal civil rights laws."
Prosecutors said the woman escaped from the Garretts' home with the help of a neighbor.
All three Garretts pleaded not guilty.
Channel 2's Tom Regan asked the Garretts' attorney, Manny Arora, about the allegations and he said, "Well, they're allegations because they're allegations. So proof and allegations are two different things and we'll see how it works out."
If convicted, Malika Garrett faces up to 60 years in prison; Russell Garrett 50 years and William Garrett up to 10 years.
