Deputy Shot During Suspect Search

 

BARTOW COUNTY, Ga. —

The Bartow County Sheriff’s Office said two area schools were placed on lockdown and a deputy was injured when man ran off while they were trying to serve a warrant Monday.

Neighbors told Channel 2 Action News reporter Ross Cavitt that the incident started with an all-night fight between residents at two homes on Pine Grove Road. By the time the sun came up, deputies with the Bartow County Sheriff's Office had a warrant for one of the men, but when they arrived to take him into custody he did not want to go and ran.

During the confusion, a deputy shot himself in the leg when a police dog jumped on him. He is expected to be OK.

Police immediately began to search the area for the man just before 1 p.m. -- which caused the lockdown of Cartersville Primary School and Cartersville Elementary School as a precaution. The lockdown was lifted in time for students to go home for the day.

Officials suspended the search for the suspect just before 4 p.m.
