Deck collapse sends 4 to trauma centers

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. —

Four people had to be taken to local trauma centers after a deck collapse.

The incident happened around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon on Chimney House Court. The injured were at the house for a family gathering.

Channel 2 action news reporter Carl Willis learned that the injured included three adults and one minor. The injuries sustained ranged from cuts and scrapes to possible broken bones.

"There was a loosening up on the deck and the way the deck fell, when it fell, it fell inward," Capt. Eric Jackson from the Dekalb County Fire Department said. "The four individuals that were on top of the deck actually slid down because of the way the deck fell. And they slid down a deck landing up against the house and that's where the numerous injuries came. It could have been a lot worse."

Investigators said the house was built in 1988 or 1989 and that the deck looked about that old, too. The deck did have some rotting wood and possible termite damage.
