GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. —
A week after being released from the hospital, a woman fighting a flesh-eating bacteria is getting a big gift
The city of Snellville plans to give Aimee Copeland's family the money raised at Aimee's Weekend in mid-June at Snellville City Hall Monday night.
Copeland left an Augusta hospital last Monday to begin the rehabilitation process.
Mother and daughter Vickie Gallup and Brianna Quador used to work with Copeland, and Quador attended high school with her. They decided to hold the benefit along with the city after they heard of Aimee's condition.
Doctors had to cut off both of Copeland’s her hands and feet along with one leg.
"I thought, ‘How is she ever going to get through this and how is her family getting through this?’" Gallup told Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri.
They hosted Aimee's Weekend, a two-day benefit with live entertainment, a silent auction and T-shirts for sale featuring Copeland.
They estimated it brought in more than $16,000, and people have continued to donate.
"It was heartwarming," Gallup said.
"It felt good to know people wanted to do something. Everyone else cared, too, and wanted to donate their money, their time," Quador added.
Both women said the physical strength Copeland has shown is incredible, as is her emotional strength.
"She has one heck of a backbone and she's shown that to the whole world now," Gallup said.
Copeland's father has talked about the high costs the family is facing. The organizers said they hoped the donations help Copeland and her family in the months ahead.
