ATLANTA —
After Channel 2 Action News broke the story of a major breach in airline security at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, things have been moving quickly in Washington, D.C.
The Transportation Security Administration has now launched its own investigation into the Channel 2 Action News investigation findings. Director John Pistole told investigative reporter Aaron Diamant that the TSA's investigation could lead to a complete review of security procedures for airline caterers nationwide.
However, according to the whistle-blower who tipped us off to the breach in security, nothing has changed at Gate Gourmet.
The whistle-blower sent Diamant pictures shot inside Gate Gourmet at its Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International airport facility, just Wednesday. The pictures show catering carts still unsealed ready to be loaded onto planes.
"We've got to get this stopped. We have to do it immediately," said Rep. Paul Broun, of Athens, Ga. who sits on the House Homeland Security Committee.
Federal law says catering supplies "must be sealed to ensure easy visual detection of tampering."
Last week a Channel 2 Investigation exposed this major security lapse after the same whistle-blower brought us undercover video of the unsealed carts and Gate Gourmet workers piggybacking through security turnstiles.
"I can bring a gun in there if I want to, a bomb, anything," the whistle-blower told Diamant.
Channel 2's stories are now forcing top lawmakers to take swift action.
Previous stories:
In Washington, D.C., Wednesday, the Senate's Homeland Security Committee's ranking member questioned Pistole.
"What is TSA doing in response to this report?" Sen. Susan Collins asked Pistole.
"We immediately sent a team to Atlanta," Pistole told the Committee's members.
Wednesday, Diamant questioned Pistole about what role the Channel 2 Investigation played in the TSA's investigation of the breach.
"That is of concern, and, yes, I will watch the piece. I'll look at it and assess if we need to make changes in terms of our current security protocols with catering companies," said Pistole.
Broun sent a letter Thursday calling on the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee to hold "a full hearing on this matter as soon as possible."
"We've got to have answers. We've got to have them quickly. We've got to call the TSA to task," said Broun.
Diamant received an email from Gate Gourmet Thursday afternoon that said it follows the rules set by the TSA and will comply with any new ones enforced.
