Cars Lined Up For Funeral Procession Broken Into, Robbed

FAIRBURN, Ga. —

Fairburn police said a brazen thief broke into and stole from cars parked outside a funeral home.

Thieves broke into four cars lined up for a procession at a funeral home on Camp Creek Parkway.

Police said the thieves stole several hundred dollars, iPods, cell phones and Social Security cards.

"Why people would do it, I have no idea. And right in the middle of a funeral," said Jimmy Black, who was at the funeral home for his brother's funeral. "It was a bad thing. I mean it hurt me for something like that to happen at a funeral. They have no respect for the dead."

As he was leaving the funeral home to bury his 62-year-old brother, Bo Black, Jimmy Black said he walked outside to discover shattered glass surrounding the cars waiting for the procession.

"She come running back crying saying they broke into her car, stole her pocketbook. My niece had just made a student loan and they had gotten her money," said Black.

Patricia Turner lost $726 toward tuition at Jacksonville State University.

"As they was bringing his body out his son Terry was actually the one who noticed my window busted. Which was the second car behind the hearse," said Turner.

Police said fifteen minutes after the robberies, the thieves went to an East Point bank and took another $500 from Turner's account.

"(She) went in and filled out a withdrawal slip and actually had nerve to pass herself off as myself," said Turner.

For Black's family, the experience has robbed them of more than their belongings. They said it has ruined the honorable farewell they planned for the man they loved so dearly.

"We always told each other we loved each other. He'll be missed. But it will be remembered for what happened," said Black.

Turner said what she primarily wants back is her cell phone because she had pictures of her deceased uncle and recently deceased grandmother that are priceless to her.

Fairburn police are investigating.
