ATLANTA —
Because the April 15 tax filing deadline falls on a Sunday this year, by law, taxpayers have until the next business day to file taxes. But, because Mon., April 16, is Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in the District of Columbia, the deadline has been extended to Tues., April 17.
Twelve Atlanta-area post offices will have extended window service hours April 17 to help filers meet the midnight deadline.
"Next to Christmas, the tax filing deadline is the busiest day of the year at the post office," says Atlanta District Manager William J. Mitchell. "By extending hours, we hope to make this day a little less stressful for our customers."
