3 Teens Arrested In Georgia Tech Student Shooting

ATLANTA —

Police have arrested three suspects in connection with the shooting of a Georgia Tech student during a robbery last month, one of several attacks during a recent rash of crimes near the downtown Atlanta campus.

Patrick Whaley, 23, was shot outside the Tivoli Tenside Apartment complex near the intersection of Northside Drive and 10th Street on May 4.

Police identified two of the suspects Tuesday as Deangelo Love, 17, and Maurice Brown, 19. Police said they also arrested a third teenager.

They were arrested on June 10 on charges of aggravated assault, armed robbery and kidnapping.

Whaley talked with Channel 2 Action News reporter Tom Regan about the attack after he was released from the hospital.

They said, 'Get down on the ground.' I was like, are you serious? Are you kidding me? This cannot be happening right now," said Whaley. "I didn't realize it was serious until one of the guys started going through my pockets and I felt a barrel on the back of my head."

On-campus Georgia Tech students said they do feel safe, with Georgia Tech police and emergency phone boxes. But just off campus, more than a dozen students have been attacked, many at gunpoint, and it has everyone on edge.

Police said most of the attacks happen between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. to students walking alone. The university has been sending out alerts, but now they’re sending out more officers.

“The security and safety of our faculty and staff and students are utmost in our concern and foremost in our thoughts,” said Georgia Tech President Bud Peterson.

The school president, joined by Atlanta and Georgia Tech police officers, said they will work together and increase their presence with a detailed plan of attack to make the gunmen the targets instead.

“It’s serious to us and we’re going to make sure our students are protected and our citizens are protected,” said Kwanza Hall with the Atlanta City Council.

Word of the arrests came as detectives investigated the armed robbery of another Tech student early Tuesday morning.
