12-Year-Old Boy Drowns At Lake Allatoona

A 12-year-old boy was pulled from Lake Allatoona and taken to an area hospital, where he later died, said Cherokee County spokesman Tim Cavender.

The boy was discovered in a body of water near the Sweetwater Creek Campground, said Melissa Cummings with the Department of Natural Resources.

Officials said CPR was administered at the scene.

Paramedics took the boy to Northside Cherokee Hospital. He died after crews attempted CPR for 30 minutes, Cavender said.

The victim was later identified as Travis Popham, according to DNR. The victim had been camping at the camp ground area with family.
