POLK COUNTY, Ga. —
A pilot was killed when a small plane crashed in Polk County on Friday morning.
The crash happened on Treat Mountain Road shortly after 8:30 a.m. Channel 2’s Erin Coleman went to the road, where the plane was still lying around noon. Haralson County Fire Chief Brian Walker said the victim was the only person aboard the plane.
It is unclear what caused the crash, but Polk County’s emergency management director said there was heavy cloud cover at the time. The plane burst into flames on impact, killing the unidentified pilot.
“Two witnesses apparently came around the road and saw the smoke and notified 911
Polk County EMA Director Randy Lacey told Coleman.
FAA officials called the plane an RV4, a small, home-built aircraft. It is registered to a Jacksonville, Fla. resident and was built it in1993.
It is unclear where the plane took off or where it was going.
