1 Killed By Falling Tree; More Rain, Storms Hit Metro Atlanta

 

ATLANTA —

A combination of howling winds and ground softened by rain sent trees toppling across metro Atlanta Monday, pulling down power lines and leaving 127,000 people without power.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist David Chandley said more rain and possible thunderstorms will move through overnight and into Tuesday morning. The showers and clouds are expected to move out by Tuesday afternoon.

One person was killed Monday morning by a falling tree on Nachoochee Drive near Peachtree Battle, according to a public information officer at the Atlanta Fire Department. A tree fell on a pickup truck, which caused the vehicle to burst into flames. The victim's name has not been released.

Viewers called WSB-TV Channel 2 to report trees down in Atlanta and Cobb, Cherokee, DeKalb, Forsyth and Fulton counties.

By 6 p.m. Georgia Power reported more than 103,000 customers state-wide were without power. The state's EMCs (Electric Membership Corporation) had 24,000 customers without service.

Crews from Kentucky, Louisiana, Texas, Florida, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina are headed to Georgia to help restore service.

In DeKalb County, a tree crushed a car and damaged a home in the 3400 block of Alison Drive in Doraville.

So many people called 911 to report downed trees and power outages, the calls threatened to overwhelm dispatchers. Officials requested citizens call the non-emergency number at (404) 294-2911 to report fallen trees and downed lines.

Captain Jason Shivers of the Forsyth County Fire Department said there were multiple trees down in that county. In the 6900 block of Full Harvest Court a tree fell onto a house.

On Lake Lanier, at the Port Royale Marina, the high winds ripped a dock from its moorings. The wind-blown dock, dragging dozens of boats with it, smashed into another dock. Both docks and at least 25 boats sustained heavy damage.

In Cherokee County, a tree fell onto a car and pulled down power lines along Woodstock Road.

There were also trees down at Heardsville Road and Highway 20 and along Wallace Tatum Road.

In Fulton County, in Roswell trees fell onto homes in the 1100 block of Taylor Oaks Drive and the 1800 block of Bridle Ridge Trace. At the intersection of Warsaw and Sway Branch a falling tree pulled down power lines.

In Alpharetta, tress fell along Webb Bridge Way and on Hopewell Road south of Thomson.

A massive tree fell at a medical complex along Windward Parkway, crushing three vehicles. A viewer snapped several pictures and emailed them to wsbtv.com You can see them to the left and below.

In Cobb County, a tree fell in the 1600 block of Climbing Rose Court in the Hedge Rose subdivision.

Two trees fell in the Vinings North subdivision off Atlanta road in Smyrna. As a city crew cleared away the first tree, the second one fell, sending the workers scattering. No one was injured. The crew quickly regrouped and cleared away the second tree.

Along Robinson Road, a driver was trapped in her car when two trees fell. The driver stopped when the first tree fell in front of her and then the second tree fell right onto her car. She walked away without any injuries.

There are also reports of fallen trees on Acworth Due West Road in Kennesaw. At least one of those trees fell onto a home.

A home in the 1500 block of Barrier Road was also damaged by a falling tree.

Along Woodstock Road at Queensbury, a falling tree damaged a car and pulled down power lines.

In Atlanta, a tree crashed into a house in the 4200 block of Exter Close Road off Northside Drive.

A house in the 1200 block of Centra Villa Lane, near Cascade Road, was heavily damaged by a falling tree.

On Collier Drive a falling tree damaged a fire truck.

A woman was trapped in her house by a falling tree near the intersection of Argus Circle and Argus Place.

At 88 Clair Drive a house was damaged by a tree that toppled in the wind.

On the Buford Highway Connector near Peachtree, traffic was blocked in one lane by a fallen tree.
