School service project helps bring a little holiday cheer

KUNA, Idaho — Some Idaho sixth-graders are helping to bring a little holiday cheer to their hometown through a school service project called Operation Decoration.

Nearly 90 students from Reed Elementary School in Kuna, Idaho, hit the town’s main street with window paint and Christmas lights to help create a winter wonderland.

From snowmen to Christmas trees, the students are all painting to give back to the community.

"I don't really care about presents. I mean, it's more about giving than receiving. I like helping the community," student Kellee Monday told KIVI-TV.

This year, the children are responsible for decoration about 30 storefronts in a winter wonderland theme.

Business owners said the kids love to show off their work."It's fantastic that we can give back to the community and they can give back to us. We like being part of the community here and they're doing a fantastic job on our windows," said Christopher Mayers, a financial advisor for Edward Jones Investments.

Teachers say the community service project not only brightens up the town, but also teaches the students a valuable lesson.

"At this point, they are learning how important it is to do community service and they feel a sense of pride they never felt before," said teacher Sari Stewart.

The window decorations will be up through at least mid-January.
