The dogs were taken to Pet Dominion animal shelter in Rockville, Maryland, where they received baths for the very first time and are recovering after being caged for days on end.

"It's a very sad situation. I know, for me, I was blown away that this actually occurs," Christine Stenson, of Pet Dominion, told WJLA-TV. "The fact that these dogs are being slaughtered and treated cruelly, it's just mortifying."

Video released by Humane Society International shows the dogs living in deplorable conditions.

They’ve never had toys to play with before, or even treats.

“When they first got here I tried to give them treats and they were like, ‘Treats? What’s that?’” Stenson said. “They are getting love and attention as they are getting their baths."

Stenson told WJLA-TV the pampering is making a noticeable difference in the dogs.

“They are starting to act more like our dogs at home, which is very rewarding to be a part of,” Stenson said.

Once the dogs are healthy, they will then be taken to North Carolina, where they will be put up for adoption to be placed into forever homes.
