ATLANTA,None - The following is a minute by minute development of the storm in metro Atlanta and North Georgia.

11:31am Boil water order lifted in Blairsville.

2:36pm The Georgia DOT says their 511 service set a record with 95,460 calls in a four day period. The service has now reached 5 million calls since it started in August 2007.

1:43pm Atlanta public schools cancels all Saturday extracurricular and sporting events.

1:40pm The Georgia DOT announces they are scaling back sow and ice removal efforts. Workers began 12-hour shifts on Sunday at 4 p.m., just a few hours before the heavy snow started to fall. Crews will be strategically located throughout the weekend and the MLK state holiday on Monday to respond to any additional icing that may occur.

11:34am Channel 2's Richard Elliot reports a massive snow removal project is underway outside the Georgia Dome. Bobcats are working to clear snow and ice around the stadium in preparation for tomorrow's Falcons playoff game.

10:11am NewsChopper 2 is over Hartsfield-Jackson airport and it looks like nearly all of the ice has been cleared. Travelers should still expect a few delays, but not many cancellations.

9:50am Athens-Clarke County police say many streets remain icy. , E Broad St between Thomas St. and the railroad tracks just east of Foundry St has been opened. However, Hancock Ave between Thomas St and Foundry St is closed. They continue to have problems with black ice.

8:33am Zoo Atlanta is closed on Friday. Administrative offices will open at 11 a.m.

8:03am DeKalb Schools employees no longer required to report on Friday.

5:00am All metro interstates are passable and traffic is moving slow where icy patches remain. Some interstates have lanes still closed because of ice, especially the inner lanes. Drivers are being encouraged to wait until sunrise if possible before heading out.

1:57am Channel 2's Tom Regan is finding much better conditions this morning in spots once covered in ice. Regan shot iphone video on the Spaghetti Junction ramp from I-285 to I-85 north in DeKalb County.

1:56pm Now Atlanta police have asked the public to help clear their cars from the street. Officials say cars left in the street could be damaged by plows.

1:37pm Fulton County has closed schools on Friday, the first major school district to do so this afternoon.

11:17am Channel 2's Mike Petchenik is on the hunt for groceries. Finding many stores have been cleared out, Petchenik has learned delivery trucks are having a hard time making it to their destination. After searching four stores he finally located eggs.

10:15am The Department of Transportation makes an urgent plea for drivers to remove their abandoned cars from the road. The DOT says effective ice removal cannot occur while vehicles remain in travel lanes and shoulders. State law stipulates vehicles considered to be impeding the flow of traffic are to be removed by police if necessary.

9:53am Channel 2's Richard Elliot reports cars are still abandoned on the Buford Connector flyover ramp. The stretch of road refroze in the overnight hours. A Department of Public Safety patrol car is blocking the flyover ramp until the DOT arrives.

9:45am Gwinnett County police report a deadly accident that happened on Wednesday afternoon. Two cars collided on Breckinridge Boulevard. Police say one of the drivers was speeding on the ice.

9:25am Channel 2's Erin Coleman is in DeKalb County near Spaghetti Junction where a truck carrying tortilla chips has overturned. Here's here report:

7:35am Channel 2's Jeff Dore reports Glenridge Connector and ramps to Ga. 400 are now open again. DOT crews are on the scene and salting the area.

7:23am MARTA is already canceling routes it decided to open today. MARTA has stopped service on routes 83,95 and 178.

7:21am Athens-Clarke County police are asking everyone to stay home and stay off the roads today. Police say there is a great deal of ice and driving is extremely dangerous.

6:00am Channel 2's Jeff Dore reports from the Glenridge Connector. The road and its ramps to and from GA 400 have been closed.

4:00am Fewer crashes in the overnight hours than we've had the past few days. A tractor trailer did jack-knife on I-285 near Cascade Road. Traffic is down to one lane southbound. Channel 2's Tom Jones filed this report from the scene.

Wednesday January 12

11:35pm Xpress, the regional commuter coach service, will run a limited schedule Thursday. All service will go only to or from the MARTA Civic Center station. There will be no service to other Midtown or Downtown Atlanta stops.

6:42pm City of Atlanta Solid Waste Services Delayed Due to Inclement Weather. Yard trimming collections are delayed until further notice, too.

5:49pm All Rockdale County government offices and Rockdale County courts will delay opening operations until 10 a.m., Thursday, January 13 due to refreezing and black ice creating hazardous road conditions.

4:42pmThe 2011 State of the City Business Breakfast, hosted by the Atlanta Committee for Progress, scheduled for Thursday, has been postponed due to continued inclement weather.

4:36pm Forsyth County Schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday for students, teachers and all school-based employees. FCS central office 12 month employees and school principals are to report to work on Thursday at 11 a.m., and on Friday at 9 a.m. School will not be in session Monday for students in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, but employees should report to work at their normal start times.

2:54pm There is a 15-mile traffic backup on Interstate 20 eastbound caused by a problem at Six Flags Hill/Fulton Industrial Boulevard. Traffic eastbound is limited to one lane at Thornton Road. Interstate 20 is open through all of Douglas County, and there are no closures at any ramps at this time.

2:31pm DeKalb County Sanitation will resume residential garbage collection Thursday for residences that are on Monday/Thursday curbside service, and on Friday for those residences that receive Tuesday/Friday pickup.

12:11pm Channel 2's Jim Strickland boards a flight from Detroit to Atlanta. Jim and Channel 2 photographer Josh Wade are on assignment and have been stuck in Michigan since the weekend. 12:00pm AirTran Airways announces the cancellation of 80 flights today in several airports including Atlanta. They are operating extra fligths to several airports to accommodate customers.

11:46am A large accident has shut down I-285 near Langford Perimeter. The DOT camera shows one tractor trailer on its side, the other is across all lanes. Traffic is stopped completely.

11:01am MARTA resumes service briefly. The transit agency is putting some buses in service from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The routes in service are:

  • Route 1 Centennial Olympic Park/Coronet Way
  • Route 4 Thomasville/Moreland Avenue
  • Route 16 Noble
  • Route 21 Memorial Drive
  • Route 49 McDonough Boulevard
  • Route 99 Boulevard/Monroe Drive
  • Route 110 Peachtree Street (Reroute listed below)
  • Route 181 Buffington Road/South Fulton
  • Route 186 Rainbow Drive/South DeKalb

10:54am Roswell police are asking all residents to stay off the roads. Police say Highway 92 in Roswell is blocked because of cars stuck on the ice. The road is backed up to the Cobb County Line.

10:35am Simon Malls will reopen today. Mall stores are expected to open before noon, however the malls will close at 5 p.m. this evening.

9:47am Bank of America tells us all banking centers in metro Atlanta will open at noon. Banking centers with Saturday hours will have extended hours until 2 p.m. on January 15.

9:29am Norcross police have closed down part of Buford Highway. Its closed from N. Norcross-Tucker Road to Jimmy Carter because of ice. They're working to remove vehicles and treat the road.

9:10am The Georgia DOT says two sections of I-285 are impassable. The I-285 eastbound ramp to Cobb Parkway and the I-285 southbound ramp to Hwy 78 eastbound are closed because of ice.

8:40am Series of crashes continue as drivers try to get to work this morning. This time two left lanes of I-85 are closed near the airport. Channel 2's Tom Regan is driving on the other side of I-85 in Gwinnett County. He filed this video of road conditions:

7:20am Crash and a sheet of ice have shut down Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. Police are forcing cars onto Tilly Mill. All lanes are blocked.

6:45am Newschopper 2 is up and flying over I-75 near Delk Road. Ice is still covering several lanes, but traffic is moving at a reduced speed.

6:30am Multiple crashes with injuries reported across metro Atlanta. DOT reminding drivers to stay home, conditions have not improved.

4:00am Interstates have been treated for ice but they are not without problems. Crashes had closed sections of I-20, I-285 in Cobb County and Ga. 400 in south Forsyth County in the early morning hours as an Arctic cold front moved into north Georgia dropping temperatures.

Tuesday January 11

11:00pm Per DeKalb Police Department: All roads are open in DeKalb. We are still cautioning motorists to drive slowly, if they must drive at all. It is still very slick out there.

10:13pm MARTA staff will assess street conditions throughout the overnight hours and make a determination by 11 a.m. on January 12, 2011, if some very limited bus service can be reinstated. If MARTA is able to restore bus service, it will not operate for the morning rush hour but closer to noon when weather conditions should improve. Additionally, service will end by 5 p.m. when temperatures start to drop. Rail service will operate on a Saturday/Sunday schedule beginning at 4:45 am; however, customers should expect to experience delays.

7:25pm Due to continued hazardous weather/road conditions the Zoning Committee, Transportation Committee and the Finance/Executive Committee of the Atlanta City Council WILL NOT meet on Wednesday, Jan. 12. Those committees will now meet on Friday, Jan. 14.

6:10pm Fulton County Superior, State, Juvenile, Magistrate and Probate Courts will remain closed Wednesday. Officials expect to resume normal business operations on Thursday.

6:02pm The Douglas County Courthouse will be open Wednesday, January 12, from 11:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.

5:59pm No CCT (Cobb Community Transit) Express or Local Service Wednesday due to hazardous roadway conditions. Scheduled paratransit service will be offered.

5:22pm GDOT says currently all interstates in the Atlanta Metro area are open and passable for motorists. Some icy conditions persist, so extreme caution is advised.

3:15pm School closings coming in quickly now. Here's a current list: Athens-Clarke, Buford, Carroll, Dawson, Forsyth, Lumpkin, Madison, Newton, Walton and White

1:57pm Kroger spokesman says their stores will remain open. They're working hard to get more products delivered to replenish their shelves.

1:31pm Channel 2 photographer Casey Nichols captured video of traffic barely moving on I-75 in Cobb County. A series of accidents combined with the ice has caused gridlock on the interstate. This video is from I-75 near Chastain:

12:04pm Channel 2's Richard Elliot reports the evacuation of trucks on I-285 is very slow going. He says one truck driver is concerned about the health of $60,000 worth of cattle in his truck.

11:26am Gwinnett County Transit has suspended service for Tuesday. They'll decide Tuesday night about Wednesday services.

10:52am AirTran Airways says its canceling 240 flights today. Delta plans another 1,400 cancellations.

10:19am Channel 2's Tom Regan captures DOT crews plowing and salting roads on Highway 316 in Gwinnett County.

10:05am GDOT announces its closing entrance ramps on I-285, south of I-20, to clear Ice. Maintenance crews are going to lay a mixture of salt, calcium chloride, gravel and liquid deicer on I-285 from I-75 to Riverdale Road.

9:42am Channel 2's Lori Geary reports streets in downtown Atlanta are very messy. People are walking in the streets as she approaches the State Capitol. Geary said roads are better but still lots of patches of ice.

9:35am Channel 2's Mark Winne reports the drive south from WSB-TV is very treacherous in midtown Atlanta. The downtown connector is wide open in Midtown but becomes very patchy with ice and slush starting at Ralph McGill and continuing to University. The ice starts to break up on I-75 approaching Central Avenue and improves by Eagles Landing in Henry County.

9:23am Fulton County reports no road closure in unincorporated portions of county. They've had just 3 accidents since 10 p.m. There are no downed trees or powerlines.

9:09am Channel 2 producer Kellie Burkett braves the top of Spaghetti Junction. The highway is still covered in ice but passable, no signs of DOT crews working to clean up the overpass. Kellie's video can be seen here:

6:35am The DOT tells Channel 2 Action News they're not sure when people will be able to move around. I-285 remains closed south of I-20 and north of I-75 because of a wall of tractor trailers and an inch of ice, a spokeswoman said. The DOT is adding calcium chloride to thaw the ice, but its not penetrating as quickly as they hoped. The DOT reports their own trucks are also having trouble treating the roads because of the ice.

6:30am Channel 2's Tom Jones reports traffic is moving again on I-75 near the south loop. DOT crews did treat the highway, but the road remains very slippery.

4:00am I-75 remains closed in Cobb County at the South Loop due to a series of accidents. The alternate, Highway 41, is also covered in ice. A jack-knifed tractor trailer caused the wreck but had been removed. Channel 2's Tom Jones sent video of the truck being removed.

12:40am MARTA is canceling all bus service on Tuesday, January 11. MARTA will notify the public as soon as bus service can be resumed.
