Tyrone Appling, 42, had been named as the suspect in the woman's death.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Appling was the victim's estranged husband.
Police said they found a woman dead in her home on Mounte Lane around 6:30 a.m. on Monday.
The GBI later identified the victim as 40-year-old Carlotta Shields Appling. GBI investigators said Tyrone Appling forcibly entered her residence and shot her.
Police launched a manhunt for Tyrone Appling in the Athens-Clarke County area, where he was seen just before noon near North and MLK Avenues.
The GBI said he was in a residential area behind Clarke Central High School at 3 p.m.
Authorities did not disclose details of Appling's death, but did say it was self-inflicted.
