YMCA camper pulled from pool, taken to hospital

NORCROSS, Ga. — Channel 2 Action News is learning more about an 8-year-old child rescued from a pool in Norcross.

Gwinnett County authorities said a child attending the Robert D. Fowler Family YMCA camp was pulled from a pool on Jonesboro Bridge Circle at about 1 p.m.

YMCA of Metro Atlanta spokeswoman Kristen Obaranec told Channel 2's Kerry Kavanaugh the child blacked out while swimming.

A caller told 911 dispatchers the child was found in the water after being submerged for approximately 10 seconds.

Three lifeguards assisted the child out of the pool and immediately began CPR, according to a news release from Gwinnett County Fire Lt. Colin S. Rhoden.   He said the child was responsive to the life-saving measures from the lifeguards.

"Although sudden blackout is very difficult to detect above the water, the Y lifeguards were scanning the pool and were quick to respond. Their training and swift actions saved this child’s life,"  Obaranec said.

Fire crews assessed the child before transporting the patient to Scottish Rite Hospital for further observation.

He is expected to make a full recovery.
