JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Bartow County woman is in the Fulton County Jail after police said she shot her way into her ex-boyfriend’s Johns Creek home Monday morning.
Steven Burnett told Channnel 2’s Mike Petchenik he awoke around 1:30 a.m. Monday to the sound of someone ringing his door bell over and over again.
“I went down and she was parked in my driveway,” Burnett said. “I told her to go away. She wouldn’t leave. She pounded on the door.”
Burnett and police tell Petchenik that Renee McLendon, 54, then went around to a back door to gain entry into the house.
“All of a sudden, boom, she shoots through the door,” said Burnett. “I run upstairs, she gets the door open, comes up the stairs. I go to the front door and I see the gun come around the corner and I ran out the door.”
Johns Creek police say when officers arrived, McLendon had barricaded herself inside of Burnett’s townhome, so they called in the North Metro SWAT team.
“Usually there’s a lot of emotions running,” said Capt. Chris Byers. “The female actually opened the garage door and exited her vehicle to retrieve something from her vehicle. That’s the point at which she was taken into custody.”
Byers said officers have charged McLendon with aggravated assault, burglary and theft, because they said she stole the gun from Bartow County.
Burnett said McLendon sent a suicide note to her family via text Sunday night, so he was thankful police were able to arrest her without anyone getting hurt.
“I hope that she does some time and maybe cleans up her life,” he said.
